Why is dumping on internal PC floppy drive so slow?

Applies to: RIDE 1.2 and later

Note that this question targets only internal PC floppy controller – it doesn't target external devices like KryoFlux or Greaseweazle!

It's because each track is first scanned to find out what sectors it contains. Compared with utilities that assume some fixed layout of tracks, this extra step allows "hidden" sectors to be revealed as well, usually present as part of a copy-protection scheme. This extra scanning of tracks cannot be turned off to speed the dumping up.
