Can I use an HD floppy at place of a 2DD one?

No, you can't, unless you turn such HD floppy into its 2DD counterpart. To do so, cover the density identification hole that you find opposite to the write-protection hole with a sticky tape as shown in the figure below. However, be sure that data you record on such modified floppy will be highly volatile and best to be not stored for any longer time. You should use such solution only in a situation of last resort.
